Marc’s
trip to Colorado to see Tool at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Friday,
August 3 2001
I arrived in Morrison around 12:30,
grabbed a burger, and got into the park around 1:30. There were a lot of people already getting in line, so I spent
about 30-45 minutes walking around & taking pictures. They closed off the amphitheatre just as I
got up to it so I couldn’t get any pictures of it. Putzes. Anyway, I put the
cameras back in the car then got in line and waited in the heat.
They opened the gates around 5:30 and King
Crimson came on around 7:30. They were
excellent but played their usual weird, esoteric, atonal stuff. The crowd loved it, though. Tool came on around 9:00 and totally
ROCKED! The sun had gone down and the
entire horizon behind the stage was lit up with the lights of Denver. It was a little cloudy, and you could see
lightning off in the distance at times.
The full moon poked out of the clouds here and there. The atmosphere of the amphitheatre combined
with Tool’s freakishly cool stage videos made for one of the top ten shows I’ve
seen. I’d have to say that the
amphitheatre is the best place I have ever been for a concert.
